Coal Unit Train Specifications

• Train lengths vary by route, but generally range from 115 to 150 cars
• Customers generally supply their own equipment
• Non-stop service between a single origin and destination
• Does not use dedicated locomotives

BNSF offers two types of dedicated train service for grain shipments: Shuttle Trains and Destination Efficiency Trains (DET).

Shuttle Train Specifications

• Grain shuttle facilities must meet specific Design Guidelines to qualify for shuttle rates. You can also contact an Ag Products Economic Development representative and they can provide you with the Facilities Design Guidelines
• Technical track specifications can be found in the Design Guidelines for Industrial Track Projects

Destination Efficiency Train (DET) Specifications

• 110-car train consisting of four monthly or year-long Certificate of Transportation (COT) units
• All COT Units combined to create a DET must have the same shipping period
• A DET may be split enroute for unloading at multiple destinations
• Dedicated locomotives
• Loads in 24 hours
• Grain elevator facilities must meet specific Engineering Unit Train Requirements to qualify for shuttle rates. You can also contact an Ag Products Economic Development representative and they can provide you with the Facilities Design Guidelines.

How to Secure a Shuttle Train or Unit COT

• Contact your marketing representative or Kylie Rupe at 817-867-6266.
• Rules governing the shuttle program are found in Tariff BNSF 4022 .
• Review the rules governing the COT are found Tariff BNSF 4090 .

Shuttle Incentives

• Origin Efficiency Program (OEP)  (BNSF 4022 Item 13500) pays an incentive for a 15-hour load
• Destination Efficiency Program (DEP)  (BNSF 4022 Item 13501) pays an incentive for a 15-hour unload
• BNSF also has a Reload Incentive  (BNSF 4022 Item 13502) that pays an incentive for reloading a shuttle at the same location where the shuttle was unloaded.

• Train lengths vary by commodity and route
• Can be used for single car shipments with urgent deliver or handling requirements
• Non-stop service between a single origin and destination
• Requires facilities capable of handing train service
